by age 2:

• can point to some body parts

• can point to objects/pictures when named

• will listen to short stories, songs, rhymes

• follows simple commands (ex.:  Give me.  Throw the ball.)

• uses p, b, m, h, w sounds in words

• frequently uses new words

• names objects in pictures

• asks simple questions"Where's mommy? What's that?"

• combines 2 words (ex.: more bites, mommy up)  

by age 3:

• follow 2-step related directions (ex.: Get your shoes and put them in the closet.  Get your cup and go to the table.)

• understands new words

• has a word for almost everything

• consistently uses 2-3 words

• understands and uses position words in, on, under

• speech is understood by strangers
